Who is Teucer?

TEUCER (pronounced tew'-sər) is a name from Greek Mythology.  There are actually several individuals named Teucer, but perhaps the most well-known is Ajax’s half-brother who killed thirty Trojan heroes in Homer’s Iliad, defied Agamemnon after Ajax’s suicide in order to hold a proper burial, and as one of the elite Greek warriors chosen to hide in the Trojan Horse.

After the Trojan War, Teucer’s father, King Telamon, banished him from Salamis Island for the crime of not bringing Ajax’s body back from the war.  Teucer embarked on an epic journey, many aspects of which were incorporated into Homer’s Odyssey as trials of Odysseus.  Finally, he aligned with King Belus II in the campaign against Cyprus and conquered Salamis Island and founded the city of Salamis in Cyprus.

The modern city of Pontevedra (in the Spanish providence Galicia) is said to have been founded by Teucer during his epic travels, and the locals are referred to as Teucrinos.
